Therapy For Moms: Help At Every Stage Of Motherhood

Motherhood is extremely rewarding but can also have difficulties. It’s a journey that rarely brings you to your expected destination. As a mother of three and a mental health therapist I was surprised how I felt when becoming a mother. That bewilderment did not end as I exited the newborn/ baby years and moved into the elementary years of raising kids. In fact, through my professional and personal experiences, I have noticed new motherhood struggles with every stage.

Navigating the ever-changing stages of motherhood can bring up a variety of emotions. When you reach an unexpected destination in motherhood, it is okay to reach out for help. Learning about therapy for moms is the first step in helping you navigate the emotions and stages that may feel overwhelming. I hope you’ll consider therapy for moms as part of the village it takes to support adjustments to motherhood in every new phase that arises.

Motherhood Is Amazing But It Can Also Be Challenging

There is nothing more joyful than a baby’s love and attachment to their mother. Watching as your little one achieves a goal for the first time can feel euphoric. As children grow up these achievements or struggles to achieve give new meaning to heartbreak. Becoming a mother initiates a seemingly never ending cycle of excitement and confusion.

For example:

Meet Your Mom Therapist: Laura Trapini

As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker I have been working in the field for over 11 years. My passion is helping women find their own strength in every stage of motherhood. From trying to conceive or adopt, through the newborn stage, teenage years, and into empty nesters, I love working with women in every phase of motherhood.

For much of my adult life, I worked as a teacher and then a school social worker for special needs children, which led me to work with a lot of parents! I realized how much the stress of being a father or becoming a mother can impact children. What I’ve learned is that a parent can’t be the best version of themselves unless they can take care of themselves. They can’t perform well, or feel good about themselves unless they too are getting the support they need.

If you are a mom and curious how therapy may help you, reach out and I can help! Are you a woman experiencing any of the following phases of life?

All of these phases can feel lonely and exhausting. Through talk therapy, I will help you navigate racing thoughts, loss of motivation, feelings of burnout and more. I use different approaches based on your specific concerns and desires. Through the use of my clinical skills I am able to help you reframe fears, change small habits, and communicate your needs and desires.

My Therapy For Moms Services

My clinical skills and training include the use of CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), DBT (Dialectical behavior therapy), IFS (Internal Family Systems), and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). Part of the comfort I create during sessions is that you will not feel like sitting in a classroom. Regardless of your stage of motherhood, you can process and learn in a comfortable, private environment for a full hour. This time is a gift for you and your family as you take care of your needs to support them even better.

How Therapy Can Make You A Better Mother, Parent, Partner & Wife

Therapy sessions can help women become better mothers, parents, partners, and wives. When flying on an airplane with your child, take note of the flight attendant, making sure you know to put your oxygen mask on before putting your child’s on.

Why is this?
A mother’s instinct is to help their child before they help themselves, but you are no good to your child if you cannot breathe.

Taking care of yourself first will benefit your child. Your child is a unique human, and although you may have given your child half of your genes, they come out throwing you a curve ball.

Becoming a parent may have thrown you a giant curve ball of not being what you expected. The parent-child relationship is significant. Working with a therapist can give you a safe space to navigate these unexpected challenges.

Finally, becoming a mother, having a mother, wanting to be a mother, or losing your identity in motherhood brings up many emotions. Perhaps you thought you managed your childhood trauma only to become a mother and have new feelings arise. Through my training in EMDR, I can also help you process any traumas. Maybe you’re angry after becoming an empty nester and feeling great grief. Grief can be debilitating, and a therapist like myself can help you process it.

You are not alone in any phase of motherhood.

Book a session with me today and I will help you start processing the many phases of motherhood.
